Runnymede Pleasure Grounds

Runnymede Pleasure Ground near Egham is a great place to take take the children, burn off some energy, have a splash and cool down or just a leisurely walk along the river. This lovely Park offers a playground, a paddling pool, cafe and during weekends and school holidays there are also some children’s amusements.

We headed straight to the paddling pool area, and luckily for us we were the only people visiting on that morning. Safely gated and fenced off this is the perfect place to cool down on a sunny day, although not overly big – it was plenty big enough for our morning splash. It was the right depth for Isabella to confidently run around and splash in. The splash area has a slightly shallow area around the edge and then gets deeper into the middle. There is also a wall edge around the outside where you can sit.

The playground was very exciting, there was a selection of different swings, from toddler swings, older swings and a car seat swing too. A large seasaw – which I had to go on with Bella, a roundabout spinner which does go at super speed round and round extremely fast. Towards the centre of the playground was two separate climbing structures.

One was aimed at the younger children and this was low level height (this was great as meant I could easily help support Bella whilst she explored the apparatus) There was a rope ladder, slide, wobbly bridge, steps, looking binoculars and also some interactive panels on the wall.

For the older children the climbing apparatus was very high, I couldn’t even reach Bella when she climbed to the top of this.

There was a huge fireman’s pole they could climb up, swings beneath the frame itself, monkey bars, climbing poles and various areas where they could swing and climb.

Runnymead Pleasure Ground also has lots of open green space. It would be great to bring a ball to kick around, or some other outdoor games too. Or why not pack up a picnic and have a relaxing time enjoying some summer sun.

If you fancy going for a family walk then there are beautiful views across the river where there is abundance of wildlife. We actually found a bench and spent ages watching all the wildlife on the river, feeding the ducks and spotting all the boats going past. You can do a circular walk from Cooper’s Hill in Englefield Green taking in the Runnymede meadows, a stretch of the River Thames and visiting three beautiful memorials along the way, the John F Kennedy Memorial, the Magna Carta Memorial and the Air Forces Memorial.

On our way to the childrens playground we spotted children’s amusements. From the signage I could see that these open at weekends and during the school holidays, there was bouncy castles, Go Karts and other rides too. Unfortunately we didn’t get to experience these so will need to head back and visit again.

Once we had burned off a lot of energy we headed over to the Cafe for some refreshments. There was a great variety of hot and cold food and drink options, but as predicted Bella chose an ice cream. There was plenty of seating areas either inside or outside, and was a welcome break from our adventures.

We had a fantastic time here and there was so much to explore. I can’t wait to bring both children back in the summer months and explore the children amusements too.
