Cold Ash Recreation Grounds and Playpark

If you are looking for a well-equipped playground with plenty of space for the kids to run around, plus the option of a scenic country walk after, then Cold Ash in West Berkshire could be a great location to head to!

Cold Ash is a small village at the top of a hill just outside of Thatcham. As well as the playpark, there are also two lovely pubs and some beautiful and accessible walks to be enjoyed on the edges of the village.

The Play Park

The play park itself has a range of equipment for different ages. There’s a large climbing frame, swings for babies and older children, a huge slide, see-saw, a merry go round and much more. The whole area has soft matting for any tumbles that happen during play.

Alongside the playground there is a huge open field with a basketball hoop, football goals and a cricket pitch. Sometimes you might find local team practicing here, or even playing matches, so you can settle down and spectate for a while!

When it is empty it is a great space for the kids to run around and let off steam. Bring along some sporting equipment (and perhaps a picnic!) to really make the most of it.

There is free parking at the playpark making it a great place to leave the car while you play or even head of to explore the area.

Local Walks

If you are into Geocaching then there is an excellent circular route that runs around Cold Ash, and takes a couple of hours, that is well worth looking up. Otherwise head towards the Ridge and on your right, you will discover the Community Orchards with a small area of woodland for the kids to explore.

You can also turn left on the Ridge and follow the public footpaths to see some spectacular views over the Berkshire countryside. The location of Cold Ash, high up on a hill, allows for a view out over the surrounding woodland, it really is a stunning spot.

We didn’t attempt the footpath with a buggy but it was perfectly manageable for our toddler on foot (with a bit of carrying from us when he got tired!)

Pubs

After all that exploring you might be ready for a bite to eat. There are two friendly pubs in Cold Ash, the Spotted Dog and the Castle. Both have car parks on site and are very close together.

If you are visiting on a sunny day then the Spotted dog also has an outdoor play area for children surrounded by picnic benches, so you can enjoy your drink while the children play. Both pubs offer full menus, so they are also a great place to stop for lunch.

If you still have time for more adventuring, then Buckelbury Farm Park is located about ten minutes drive from Cold Ash so you could easily make your way there too!
