Five Little Pigs  restaurant and bar in Wallingford effortlessly combines chic with relaxed and an enticing menu of seasonal dishes.  Just the sort of restaurant my husband and I would choose for a date night but not where we would usually consider taking the the kids. There’s a lovely bar area and great looking cocktail menu so I think we’ll need to go back again!  The cocktails use local spirits where possible, including their own gin, and foraged ingredients.

Our family meals out usually involve pizza and my middle son in particular is a really fussy eater so I did go with a little trepidation.

Five Little Pigs have offered kids off-menu items since they opened but have now launched their Little Piglets menu for children.   Keeping to their values, it’s still all about sustainability, with local supplier and seasonal ingredients, but with accessible dishes for the younger members of your family.

Shirts on and feeling smart, my boys just loved being in a more grown up environment.  They enjoyed having a big booth, cloth napkins and a proper glasses.  I loved that there was a chilled out vibe and a friendly waiter.

My 10 and 12 year old went for the pheasant goujons which were served in a challah bun with homemade ketchup and cucumber and a helping of triple cooked chips.  I did hold my breath slightly as my fussy 10 year old took his first bite but I needn’t have worried. He wolfed it all down with a big grin on his face.

My youngest loves sausages and the long Cumberland sausage all rolled up on a skewer was an ideal choice.  It came served on toast with homemade baked beans.  It was really great to have them all being a little more adventurous and trying something a little different without stretching them too far.  The chips were absolutely delicious and now the ones I make at home don’t meet their raised expectations!

I struggled to decide what to have from the menu as there’s a great selection and variety and it all sounded so good. I chose Cornish mussels with a side of tomato salad.  The mussels were plump, cooked to perfection.  The tomato salad was no boring plain salad but had lots of interest with different varieties and all wonderfully flavoursome.  The only problem was that my eldest decided to try my mussels and then kept trying to sneak more off my plate.  The light levels were perfect for dining, not so much for taking photos so I really haven’t done our meals justice.

Before we left, I had a little look around and spotted their outdoor garden.  This would be perfect for a cocktail sun downer on a summer’s evening.

Our family meal out at Five Little Pigs was a real treat.  It was great to go out to somewhere that felt special, enjoy wonderful seasonal food and have happy kids trying something new.
