New Forest Camping
Less than 2 hours drive from Oxford, the New Forest makes an excellent camping destination doable in a weekend. There are super biking trails and the added excitement of spotting wild ponies in the Forest. there are lots of campgrounds to choose from – check out the Camping in the Forest website for a good selection. Hollands Wood campsite, near Brockenhurst is a lovely large campsite with open pitches amongst the trees.
Holland’s Wood Campsite Facilities
Holland’s Wood is a large campsite spread over a large area. There are no fixed pitches so you can choose anywhere provided that you are at least 6m from another tent. We thought that the best spots were at the far end of the campground at the edge of the forest away from the road as there was a large area of forest to explore and tree stumps for children to climb on within view of the tent. There are two large facilities blocks with hot showers, toilets and washing up areas.
New Forest Camping Wild Horses
The wild horses roaming around was a real novelty for the children. However be careful not to touch the horses as they are wild and could kick. Also, make sure you pack away all food stuffs as we spotted ponies wandering amongst the tents rummaging through any rubbish bags which had been left by tents.
Things to Do in the New Forest
You could spend a weekend exploring the forest and bike riding along the forest tracks. You could also take a trip to the seaside – Milford on Sea with ferries to Hurst Castle and the Isle of Wight is less than 30 mins drive away.
