Nestled right in the city centre, Modern Art Oxford is a vibrant and inspiring contemporary art gallery. Perhaps not what would first come to mind when looking for somwhere to visit with kids but think again!
Head to the Studio on the ground floor and there’s a space that has been specially designed for creative, hands on fun. When we visited they had an exhibition in the main gallery from artist Belkis who uses a print making technique called collography.
Using this as a theme, the workshop table was full of materials so that you could make your own designs and pads for printing. A great activity for all ages from my youngest through to my teen who is studing art GCSE.
If you’ve got really little ones, it’s a grreat inclusive space for them too. There are thick padded mats on the floor, wooden toys, a great big drum and a semi circular balancing board.
Don’t feel you need to stay restricted to the Studio if you have kids. While they might only buzz round quickly, it’s still a great opportunity to explore the wonderful space of the main gallery on the first floor. All white with a vaulted ceiling, it’s an impressive space to display their latest exhibitions.
Down below there’s the coolest cafe in Oxford. An explosion of colour, the decor and fixtures are modern art in themselves.
Artist Emma Hart‘s exuberant style sets this cafe apart from any others I’ve been to in Oxford.
