During half term we visited a country Berkshire pub that dates back to the 15th century. It is renowned for delicious food, great service and a great kids play area. The Palmer Arms.
We visited on a weekday lunch time but still booked a table due to its popularity. Just round the corner from the historical Tudor house, Dorney Court, The Palmer Arms is located on Village Road with a car park to the side. Its also a popular destination for cyclists, particularly when you could cycle and scoot around the nearby Dorney Lake.
We chose a seat for outdoor dining. A circular wooden bench with an umbrella shade. They also had an area that was fully covered over with a large stylish marquee style cover but with it being such a beautiful day, we chose to be party in the sun. Their outdoor area is larger than expected with plenty of seating but all well-spaced apart.
The boys immediately dashed off heading to the play area at the end of the garden. It’s slightly hidden so it isn’t easy to keep an eye on them unless you opt for seating under the cover which is closer. If I was there without my eldest who is 9 years old, I would have felt I would need to supervise my 3 year old. The play area consists of a high wooden climbing apparatus more suited for over 3’s/4’s with a slide and a variety of climbing access points – climbing wall, netting and steps. There is also a chicken pen with some chickens and at the moment little chicks which the boys thought were great!
There was a large choice of classic British food on offer which they aim to source locally and support other local businesses. A separate kids menu which had mainly hot food. The boys opted for Macaroni cheese with garlic bread which was a substantial portion. Perfect size for my forever hungry 9 year old but Joe struggled to eat it all.
There were two adults menus to choose from. A quick lunch menu with a choice of ciabattas and wraps as well as light bites or a more filling dinner style menu which had a lot to choose from.
My husband chose a chicken wrap which looked delicious and fresh. I decided on a goats cheese salad from the starter menu which I very much enjoyed. The food came out in good time and the staff were friendly and attentive.
It was perfect having a kids play area which kept the boys entertained but also a pleasant setting for adults to relax and enjoy. We often find it hard to find both but The Palmer Arms supplied a perfect environment for a mid week lunch. There are also some lovely nearby places in Dorney to explore for a walk or bike ride nearby including The Jubilee River which is just down the road, for a riverside stroll.
