It’s rare to find a café with an outside space that is just as beautiful as it’s inside, but this certainly the case at Teashop by the Canal in Newbury. In good weather you can sit alongside the canal to enjoy your tea and a slice of cake and when the wind and rain strike then the inside of the café is a vintage floral wonderland that is wonderfully cosy.
The highlight of the teashop menu is the homemade cakes but the lunch menu is also delicious. They do a great weekend brunch menus, with a fantastic eggs benedict with crispy bacon served on an English muffin, as well as full lunch menu including a range of toasties, open sandwiches and homemade soup of the day.
We also love the kid’s menu (called the Picolino Party!) which includes a sandwich, crisps, juice carton and mini slice of homemade brownie. For a special occasion the teashop also offers an afternoon tea which was by far the best one I’ve ever had when I was treated to it for Mother’s Day.
Upstairs in the café you will find information about the history of this building right by the canal as well as information on the history of the Kennet and Avon Canal.
You can also board a canal boat tour with the Kennet and Avon Canal boat Trust on their narrowboat Jubilee which departs from just outside the café. There is an information board with times and dates of trips just outside the café, or you can book ahead online.
As well as it’s lovely location alongside the canal, the Teashop is also right opposite the library and Victoria Park in Newbury so you can easily make the most of your day with a visit to the children’s library and play park after your visit.
There’s also a large car park (Newbury Library Carpark) right alongside the café.
